Didi Inspired Gifts and Toys Shop Review

If you follow me over on the ‘gram, you’ll know that my latest obsession is Sonny Angels – a cute, miniature kewpie doll with fun headgear that hails from Japan. I bought a couple a few months ago and from there it spiralled. I have a nice collection of them now (but no home for them so if anyone can link me to some fun shelving that’d be great) and it is ever-growing. These little toys are highly collectable and secret versions command good money. I don’t care about all that though – I just love their cute little faces!

 ANYWAY.

In a previous post I mentioned one of my favourite shops to buy these little guys from; Retro Kids. In this post I’d like to mention another – Didi Inspired Gifts and Toys which you can find here. Didi Inspired Gifts and Toys is an independent online shop run by the lovely Fiona. This shop is amazing for Sonny Angels (and other cute collectables) so if you’re looking to grow your collection I really can’t recommend it enough. As always with these types of posts, I’m shouting out Didi Inspired because it is an indie, small business that provides amazing service. If you don’t already you really should start – shop small.

I first discovered Didi Inspired through eBay as Fiona has a shop over on there too. I had been searching in vain for the elusive Sonny Angel Halloween series and just couldn’t find it anywhere – so I hopped on over to eBay and to my luck found that Didi Inspired sold the series. From there I realised that there was also a site, and it was filled with Angel goodness!

I have lost count now how many times I have shopped at Didi Inspired but I am so impressed with the service I have received every time. Firstly, Fiona is very helpful, accommodating and just a lovely woman to chat to – and that’s something I really value and look for in small business. If you have a query Fiona will get back to you promptly and she’s always happy to help. Delivery is always very prompt also, another biggie for me as I’m super impatient! Everything is always packaged well and Fiona always leaves a little note of thanks and discount code for the next time. It’s small details like these that make you feel valued as a customer (and of course, want to come back to shop again!)

The last order I made with Didi Inspired was for an entire box of Sonny Angel Animal Series one. I was really excited to discover that these were on sale at the quite frankly amazing price of £59.99 – I think this is the cheapest you’ll find these anywhere online. Naturally when I saw the price I had to get them! If you’d like a whole box of Sonny goodness you grab one here! But please don’t grab them all as I would like to come back for more!

Anyway, my order arrived wrapped up securely and I was surprised and delighted to discover Fiona had thrown in a little freebie parrot! I love a good freebie so this discovery literally made my day. As I say, I have been shopping with Didi Inspired very frequently (so don’t expect a freebie with every order!)

What a …kewpie pie 😉

Inside one full series box you will get 12 individual boxes. These should, in theory contain one of each of the series. However you could get lucky with a secret. I do like the secrets but I’m not usually that lucky and anyway, I love having the full set. You can imagine how excited I was to open 12 of these little guys!

I guess you’re wondering who I got? Well, the full series duh! Here’s the line up…

Frog, monkey, rabbit, elephant

Lion, Koala, Crocodile, Dalmation
sonny5
Panda, Tiger, Leopard, Cockerel

And the full Animal series one line up together:

The usual suspects!

I had another fantastic shopping experience with Didi Inspired and was very happy with my order. In case you were wondering, the little rabbit is my favourite!

Didi Inspired Gifts and Toys doesn’t just sell Sonny Angels though, it’s packed full of cute collectables and goodies for children and adults alike. Some of my personal favourites:

Retro Kids review

It’s been a little while since I’ve blogged- almost two months I think (I won’t bore you with the details just yet.) But today I thought I’d write a review of an amazing little shop I have recently discovered. This shop is Retro Kids and if you’d like to have a browse you can do so here

A little bit of background. Retro Kids does what it says on the tin. It caters to kids (big and small) who have a taste for retro toys, gifts and homewares. I am a big fan of anything vintage-inspired and I absolutely love independent little shops. This one is a small family business and as I’ve explained in previous posts, I really think it’s important to shop small and support local.

I first discovered Retro Kids as I was searching for Sonny Angels online. If you’ve never heard of Sonny Angels, they are little collectable figurines – hailing from Japan. A modern take on the traditional Kewpie doll, these little guys feature fun headgear such as vegetables, fruit, animal and so on. There are lots of different series to collect and they come in blind boxes meaning whatever you pick will be a surprise – something which I find seriously addicting! Anyway, I stumbled across Retro Kids because they sell these little Sonny Angels at the best price I could find on the internet.

Priced at £5.95 per box, these little cuties are a serious bargain! I’ve since shopped with R.K on multiple occasions and have had a fantastic experience each time so thought it was worth shouting about!

On this particular experience I ordered four Sonny Angels. Two from the vegetable series and two from animal series version one. I opted for next day delivery and it arrived promptly on time. The packages were all wrapped up in the most gorgeous retro-inspired striped paper bags and came with a free little bag of sweets and a thoughtful handwritten note. For me this really differentiates the service you receive from indie shops to the big boys.  Everything felt very personal, thought out and it was like receiving a gift from a friend which I adored- the small things can really make such a big difference to the whole shopping experience.

This was a very lucky set ! from the vegetable series I got the little cabbage and the sweet potato, and from the animal series I got the elephant and lion. As you can imagine I was incredibly happy with my little haul!

Retro Kids isn’t just great for Sonny Angels however. It has so many wonderful toys and collectables that are perfect for your children or, if like me you’re an overgrown child – yourself! Below I’ve taken some of my favourite picks from the website. Beware, you may just want to buy everything.

Etsy review – biscuits, beans and a couple of Mandrakes

Over the past couple of months I’ve been doing some serious online shopping (whoops!) and have returned again to my favourite online outlet- Etsy! I’ve purchased some really cool things lately so thought I’d blog about what/who I’ve been splurging on.

Please note: this post contains affiliate links.

The Beast Peddler

You can find The Beast Peddler lurking HERE

This shop sells the most amazing handmade art dolls/plush all with a magical theme. It is stocked maybe once or twice a week, usually on Saturdays and stock can range from mandrakes, to teacup demons to little moths. My favourites are the adorable mandrakes and the mushroom folk. Unfortunately these guys are seriously hard to get. When the shop is restocked everything sells out in under a minute. Yep, beasts are apparently big business! I tried for months to get a mandrake without luck, then finally I managed to snag one! (He is called Enwulf and is the little guy on the right.) And my boyfriend managed to snag me one too! (Beowry) Ugh, they are beyond adorable and I am completely in love with them. These are definitely a collectors item though and they certainly don’t come cheap. They are very well made however, ship with an adoption certificate and just add a touch of magic to your home. I am besotted with my little mandrakes and can’t wait to get a mushroom folk to keep them company.

You Make Me Design

You can find this shop HERE

A recent discovery for me, You Make Me Design has very quickly become a new obsession. There’s so much in the shop I want to buy it’s crazy. YMMD features loads of super cool and kitsch jewellery that’s really fun. I am a HUGE fan of all the retro beans items (and have my eye on the cushion) This time I went for the little beans pin which I think is a fun way to add a touch of playfulness to an outfit. It’s been firmly stuck to the lapel of my coat all week and I’ve had lots of comments on it!

Nikki Mcwilliams

You can find this shop HERE

So, I’ve mentioned this shop and Nikki’s fabulous biscuits over on this blog on a few occasions. So much so I hardly feel it needs an introduction however if you’re just joining me, Nikki sells amazing homewares and jewellery all with a super fun biscuit theme! I have a pair of custard cream cushions that I love, as well as a mini custard cream necklace and statement jammy dodger necklace. The next step was obviously one of her awesome brooches. I didn’t actually buy this from her Etsy shop – I went to her website, however she also has a shop over at Etsy so I thought it was worth a mention!

The brooch itself is of amazing quality. Very well made, vibrant and fun. I’ve already worn it out and had some comments on it, it’s just very fun!

er2

Wooden Siberia

You can find this shop HERE

I really don’t know how I stumbled across this shop but I am SO glad that I did. This shop sells kitsch, fun, cute and quirky wooden brooches that have been hand-painted. The designs are really great and the attention to detail is spot on. Let it be known that you heard about Wooden Siberia here first! I think this girl is going to be really successful with her shop and she’s one to watch for sure. I purchased the wooden pretzel brooch and she sent me some extra goodies too! I got an adorable ice lolly brooch, sticker and thank you note. The packaging was also extremely cute. The little touches are what really make me love shopping Etsy – customers are valued so much more and it’s that personal feel that makes it so rewarding. I love my pretzel brooch and lolly pop brooch and can’t wait to wear them around a snack-themed ensemble!

Lucky Dip Club Box Review

I have been following Leona and her Lucky Dip Club journey over on the ‘gram for a couple of years now – always eagerly awaiting the hashtag to peruse what fun goodies everyone received in the post. I always wanted to get a box, but I was waiting for just the right one – plus I’ve not been very good at keeping track of the time/date and they sell out pretty quickly!

Anyway, when Leona announced the April box as being Breakfast themed I knew it was time I jumped on the wagon. Setting my alarm I finally snapped up a box! As I’ve mentioned, this is my first ever LDC box – I really couldn’t be happier with it!

For those not familiar with LDC, it is a subscription service that sends you a box set to a theme every month. You can also purchase a one off box like I did. Themes in the past have included Cats and Cocktails, Biscuits, Slumber party and so much more. In the box you can expect to receive a bunch of goodies (sometimes personalised) that have been collaborated on by some seriously cool illustrators, artists and creators. This is usually jewellery, pin badges, pieces of art, stationary etc and of course, a copy of the inspiring mag Girl Planet which has lots of tips and insight in to the worlds of various creatives.

Back to the April box. As I mentioned earlier the theme was ‘breakfast’ and the artists that collaborated on it were @belsartworld@tinytreatboutique and @themakearcade whom I urge you all to go and check out!

So, what did I receive in my box?

ldc1

Upon opening the box I could see everything was neatly packaged and wrapped – this element really makes the box feel like a gift which is super exciting. Yay for nice packaging!

ldc2

As you can see the box was pretty full! I’ll go in to detail about each individual piece.

ldc3

In terms of jewellery this box came with a cute Tiny Treat Boutique milk bottle necklace and an amazing cereal pin! This adorable bowl of Yay has been on my coat lapel all week, next to my trusty beans and goldfinch pins. Personally the pin is one of my favourite bits of the box!

ldc9

ldc4

ldc5

Another favourite in the box was this super-cute fried egg brooch kit from The Make Arcade! I was REALLY hoping that egg would feature, so I pretty much lost it when I discovered this friendly little guy inside. The kit comes with step-by-step instructions and everything you’ll need to create the brooch including felt, safety eyes, thread, a needle and  brooch pin. I haven’t made my egg yet but I’ll be giving it a go shortly and fingers crossed my sewing skills won’t let me down!

ldc6

Another thing I adored was this amazing tea towel complete with breakfast truck illustration – the stuff dreams are made of! I think this is FAR too nice to dry my dishes with though so I am thinking about framing it. It really is lovely and feels very good quality.

ldc7

And then of course a lovely little print of the breakfast truck for my wall and a copy of Girl Planet!

ldc8

As you can see the magazine is packed full of fun features – this will be especially interesting to you if like me you are a big fan of Etsy! This page shows Kim Lawler of Finest Imaginary – another to follow on the gram if you’re a fan of handmade and unique jewellery.

So as you can see, the box was definitely worth it! It cost £20 as a one off box with free P&P (I believe P&P is £5 internationally but don’t quote me on that!) I was so impressed with this box that I set my alarm to go off for seven o’clock this morning to grab the May ‘Flower Market’ box! I can’t wait to receive that as I’m a self-confessed cacti lady and lover  of all things floral! If you’re thinking about getting a box I urge you to go for it – you won’t regret it. It’s so fun to receive a monthly box of goodies through your door and in doing so you’re helping to support some really cool gals. What’s not to love about that?! Hoo-rah!

Etsy review – potatoes, eggs and a bit of Harley

I really enjoyed writing my last Etsy review, and, seeing as i’ve been on another mini-spree, thought I would write another.

Once again I’ve picked some really cool shops to shout out and highlight. I hope you like them as much as I do!

Please note: this post contains affiliate links.

Scrumptious Delight

You can find the shop here

The Scrumptious Delight shop sells amazing food, monster and more plushes which have evoked an almost cult-like following. All feature adorable little faces which you just can’t say no to.  I’ve had my eye on a worried potato for some time now, there’s just something about that concerned little face on a potato that I find irresistible. Luckily for me I managed to snag one last week. I was surprised at how quickly it arrived in the post considering it came all the way from Canada. As I expected, when I saw this cute little potato IRL I fell in love. What can I say? It is just so freaking adorable. Also, really well made. I imagine this would make a fantastic unique present for a friend (if you could bear to part with it) I couldn’t so this one’s for me.

Why so worried, little potato?

Black Heart Creatives

You can find this fun shop here!

This shop sells really cool bespoke acrylic jewellery that’s fun to wear whilst making a serious style statement. Whilst I love everything in the shop there was no contest for me – the egg won hands down! The fried egg came in a neat little black package (for the inner goth) and arrived really safely. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the pendant (much larger than I had anticipated) and the sturdiness of it too. The first day I wore it to work it got a compliment (to which I shyly replied a thank you before scuttling away as fast as I could.) I would definitely recommend this shop-espicially for those looking for something unique and personalised. A necklace would make a fabulous and thoughtful gift for a daring friend. You can see me wearing my egg a couple of posts back.

What an eggs-ellent necklace

Obake Style

You can find this shop here

I stumbled across Obake Style when looking for a gift for my Harley Quinn-obsessed best friend. Straight away the unique design of this necklace stood out to me amongst all the generic Harley Quinn fodder on Etsy.  I was really pleased with this purchase and I have to say, the necklace is made really well and it’s certainly a high quality piece that looks really great. It also came super-quick and was packaged well (with a free temporary tattoo I believe.) My friend really liked the necklace too so that was a relief! I would recommend this shop for those in to their comic books/films – this could be particularly interesting for fans of anime.

Please note, the below is not my photograph – I took it from the Obake Style shop. I didn’t have the foresight to snap a pic of the thing before I gave it to my bestie!

So that’s me (for now) Do you have a cool Etsy shop you can recommend?

Etsy reviews (haul)

Last month I decided to treat myself to a few bits and pieces from my ever-growing list of Etsy wants. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I love buying handmade and think it’s vastly superior to mass created crap.

I thought I’d do a little review of some of the things I have purchased and the shops I purchased them from for anyone looking to treat themselves (or a friend!) this month.

Please note: this post contains affiliate links.

Birds in Hats

You can visit the shop here

It does what it says on the tin. I’ve loved this shop ever since I first discovered it which was quite some time ago now. The shop sells lots of amazing art prints and cards featuring – you guessed it- birds in hats. The illustrations are quirky, cute and just really appealing, especially for bird enthusiasts. I have wanted to purchase a calendar for a few years running – but somehow the window of opportunity always slips past and someone else will buy me another one. Anyway, I noticed that in the shop was a card with a print of a Zebra finch wearing a straw boater. Self proclaimed queen of the zebra finch and crazy bird lady, I have 14 of these fluff balls ‘irl’ and figured it wouldn’t hurt to add a card version to the collection too. I purchased this adorable card for a very reasonable £3 (not inc p&p) This print is way too cute to send out in the post however so I’m going to frame it and hang it up on the wall with pride.

Tukoni Tribe

You can visit the shop here

I originally discovered this adorable moth brooch (and Tukoni Tribe) through a friends Instagram and I fell in love. Tukoni Tribe features lots of beautiful and inspiring art-prints and brooches based on animal illustrations. The moth brooch struck me the most because it is quite simply adorable. I have a friend who used to squish moths when they invaded her room – to make her feel super guilty about this I told her that moths were just butterflies in business suits! I’m sure not even she would want to squish this cute lil guy though – I’ll be wearing him everywhere to spread the word; moths are awesome! He wasn’t super cheap, around £16.33 including postage and packaging. So this one is definitely a treat for me. I am happy to pay that though because he is very nice – I’m sure he’d make a great gift too.

moth
This isn’t my picture, I took it from the Tukoni shop site. Doesn’t little moth look sweet?

Charming Creatures

You can visit the shop here

I reviewed this Etsy shop some posts back but it’s always a winner for me. Technically I didn’t treat myself to this one – my boyfriend did! But I certainly would have treated myself to a cute critter if he hadn’t. Charming Creatures sells stunning custom pet ornaments and necklaces and I’ve had a couple pieces from here that I adore. This time my lovely boyfriend requested a custom necklace of one of our owl finches. I couldn’t be happier with the result! It is made so well and looks just like little Pipkin. I can’t wait to wear this out and about!

etsybuys2.jpg

etsybuys3.jpg

Nikki McWilliams

You can visit the shop here

Another firm favourite of mine is Nikki McWilliams and her biscuit goodies. This shop sells amaaaaaazing biscuit-themed treats for your home, your office and you. My mother purchased me a wonderful jammy dodger necklace for my birthday and for Christmas this year I was incredibly lucky to receive two fantastic custard cream cushions! When I heard there was going to be a seconds sale and the opportunity to buy a pick n mix bag I was (rather sadly) besides myself with excitement. In the end I went for the pick n mix bag (the bourbon was cruelly snatched from my cart before I made it to checkout.) I didn’t technically buy this on Etsy – I actually visited her other online shop. However, she trades over on Etsy and that’s why she’s included in this list!

So, what did I get in the Pick n mix bag?

I got a wonderful custard cream necklace! (my favourite)

etsybuys5.jpg

A sew your own cushion kit (again custard cream) which I sewed rather clumsily but had a lot of fun with. And a pack of cards! All the things were wrapped up in the cutest of packaging.

etsybuys4.jpg

Overall I think I spoilt myself quite a lot but what can I say, I’m worth it (I’ll keep telling myself that!) Have you made any Etsy purchases lately?

Etsy review – Charming Creatures

Disclaimer: I have not been paid or gifted anything in return for this post. I’m a big supporter of handmade and I’m writing this to share with the world one of my favourite Etsy shops.

Please note: this post contains affiliate links.

You can visit the shop here

I have been shopping with Etsy for a few years now. I am a firm believer that handmade is best – the quality of a handmade item is just far superior than that of a mass manufactured one and I really like the idea of owning something unique and tailored to suit my tastes.

I first came across the Charming Creatures shop when looking for a zebra finch necklace. Unsurprisingly I wasn’t overwhelmed by the scarce options available to me. But my search did pull up one thing – a link to a little handmade clay pet bird necklace.

I contacted Emily (the mastermind behind the clay creations) about getting my little zebra finch Cheeks immortalised in clay. I sent her a couple of photographs of Cheeks and paid the (small) fee. At every step of the process I was kept updated – I was sent photographs of the clay shape, and then of the painting. This part of the service is just one of the many things that sets Charming Creatures apart from other Etsy shops I have visited (and I believe it deserves a mention.)

When clay Cheeks arrived in the post the packaging was absolutely wonderful and very secure. The actual necklace itself was beautiful-well made, well painted – and Emily managed to capture the likeness of my sweet little bird perfectly. The necklace exceeded all of my expectations.

Some time after this I saw Charming Creatures was having a competition over on Instagram. Of course, after receiving such a beautiful piece I definitely wanted to own more. The competition was to post a photograph of your pet and write a few sentences about him/her – the prize was to be a little clay sculpture of said pet. I posted a picture of Muffin, explained why he was special and waited.

I couldn’t believe it when I won! I have never won anything in my life and was so excited to win such a fantastic competition.

Clay Muffin arrived in the post today (yay for a happy post day!) and I was blown away by how special he is.

Once again the packaging was fantastic – a small little box with ribbon and wrapped felt to enable clay Muffin to arrive minus any damages. The sculpture itself is stunning – and once again the likeness has truly been captured (most especially around his eyes.)

Size difference between a custom pet sculpture and a necklace

The great thing about Charming Creatures work is the attention to detail. I have painted clay before and it’s not the easiest of things to do – yet these beautiful sculptures have so much precise detailing and really do look lifelike. I can only imagine a whole lot of love goes in to them. They are also really sturdy and although I am very careful I imagine them to be quite hardy.

Charming Creatures doesn’t just create birds, so if you’re looking to get your pet immortalised in clay, whether it be a feathered friend or a four-legged friend this shop is for you. I can imagine also that these would make fantastic and incredibly thoughtful gifts for those that you love -I would be delighted to receive one! Here are some examples of the charming clay creations (photos taken from the Charming Creatures website.)
